Making the "Read" and "Junk Status" columns gives a few benefits
beyond simply seeing the message status.

First, there's easy sorting, of course. Just click on the column
header and all your unread messages will bunch together at one end. I
find this useful when there's a few unread messages lost among the
rest.

From the settings I have previously described, it should be clear that I display only threads with unread messages, and I jump to those unread messages by pressing "N." So I have no need to sort by read status. Moreover, that would be counterproductive because it would ruin the threading. On those rare occasions where I need to review an old thread that doesn't contain (new) unread messages, I can temporarily change my display setting to all threads. I really have no difficulty finding the new/unread messages.

Another one is to easily toggle the read/unread (or spam/ham, for that
matter) status of a message with a single click, as easily as you toggle
the "Flag" status.

Here, too, I use the keyboard shortcuts "M" (toggle read/unread), "J" (toggle junk/not junk), etc. I don't need a mouse for that.
