I am wondering, with the Mozilla org ditching Thunderbird, if SeaMonkey actually has a future.
Mozilla is not ditching Thunderbird, it's being maintained and getting one major release per year, roughly (coinciding with the ESRs), where new features developed by the community are being shipped to the mass of users. Security releases come in between. The only thing Mozilla really isn't doing any more is paying developers to actually develop more new features. Some people are still being paid for doing the needed maintenance work and integrating new features developed by the community.
And SeaMonkey is completely maintained and developed by the community. Yes, that also means that if you want anything to happen in that suite, you probably have to try to dig in and learn how to do patches yourself. That said, don't be shy, try it, the team is quite friendly and willing to help you find your orientation!
