Actually, the simley image is generated by the recipient's application. If your recipient would look at the message source as received, the ASCII smiley would be there. In the case of newsgroups, you should select [View > Message Source] from the menu bar. You will see only the ASCII smiley. If you go to [View > Zoom], you can select or deselect Zoom Text Only.
