I finally tried to update to 2.17, but the download won't run at all.

Downloaded file: seamonkey-2.17.1.tar.bz2

Same download from which I am typing this, but on 32 bit openSUSE on 2 core Intel with 4G RAM, and unpacked in /usr/local/sm2...

$ /opt/seamonkey/seamonkey
bash: /opt/seamonkey/seamonkey: No such file or directory
...
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root root   132544 Apr 10 22:11 seamonkey*   <<<<< The file is
right here
...
/opt/seamonkey $ seamonkey
bash: ./seamonkey: No such file or directory

....I start mine with /usr/local/sm2/seamonkey -P ... via KDE3 menu entry.

WTH?

Strange. How exactly did you untar? Did you try re-downloading and/or running the checksums? Does your filesystem need fsck?
