I finally tried to update to 2.17, but the download won't run at all.
Downloaded file: seamonkey-2.17.1.tar.bz2
Same download from which I am typing this, but on 32 bit openSUSE on 2 core Intel with 4G RAM, and unpacked in /usr/local/sm2...

....I start mine with /usr/local/sm2/seamonkey -P ... via KDE3 menu entry.
WTH?
Strange. How exactly did you untar? Did you try re-downloading and/or running the checksums? Does your filesystem need fsck?
