There is also SeaMonkey Bug 656056 (Make the MailNews searchBar an external toolbar in the thread pane.) which essentially proposes the same. And in fact I have (or had) a working WIP patch attached to that bug. The only problem with that patch is that this is suboptimal for Mac OSX users. See Comment 1 in that bug. Phil
Thank you, Phillip, but that's not what I meant.I have no way to post a screen shot at the moment, and there are Dire Warnings about going back from v2.1x to v2.0 so I probably couldn't make one anyway.
It was in the Search Bar in the position of the View box, but it was another box that contained a drop-down menu of all mail folders, mail accounts, servers and newsgroups. It had the exact contents as the Side Bar but didn't take any screen area because the Search bar was there already.
When clicked, it dropped down and one could select the folder or group. Upon that selection it rolled up again out of the way and the contents of that folder or group were visible in the View Pane.
I used it because I never liked the 3-pane viewing option. It's always seemed to me to be crowded and felt cramped.
