I thought I was on one thrread.
If I reply to a text-only thread, the spellcheccker does underline. But
if it's a richtext window, such as this one, it does not unnderline
misstakes.
Language is set to English (Canada). I can switch it to English (USA)
but it doesn't make a difference.

Two places to look in case you inadvertently changed your settings:
1a) Edit | Spellcheck as you type
(in the composition window for a particular message) and
1b) Edit | Preferences | Appearance | Spelling: Check spelling as you
type
(for mail messages generally)
2) Edit | Preferences | Appearance | Spelling
Make sure the language setting matches the language you use.
