I don't think I should have to install an add-on to fix this. YMMV.

I didn't say you have to. userChrome.css works just as well, but making changes to it requires a SM restart for them to take effect. Changes done with Stylish take effect either immediately, or after certain actions (in case of treechildren CSS, hovering an affected tree; in other cases, affected windows need to be reopened).
