Does the operating system have its own address book? Mine (Mac OS)
does, and that is where all my address entries are. It is readable

How does SeaMonkey know to look there? Have you checked the box here?

When addressing messages, look for matching entries in:

[X] Directory Server: [specify location of MacOS address book]

Or is it just naturally clairvoyant? ;-)

I use the keyboard shortcut to open the address book window: Cmd-5
(For Windows, presumably Ctrl-5).

Yes, that is the Windows shortcut.

But I thought we were talking about how it autocompletes when you enter
a partial name in the address fields.

The latest question was about how SeaMonkey knows how to look in the address book. More of the answer is that it does not. You need to open the window and find the address (at least, if you use the operating system address book).
