Marge, When you have your "Sent" folder selected, what is your
setting under View->Threads?

I see the View File but nothing about threads. Actually I have no
idea what a thread is other than in sewing.

Across the top of your screen, you should see:

File Edit View Go Message Tools Window Help

If you click "View" there, one of the options should be "Threads."
Under that you will see:
     All
     Unread
     Threads with Unread
     Watched Threads with Unread
     ---------------------------
     Ignored Threads
     ---------------------------
     Expand All Threads \
     Collapse All Threads *

In computer jargon, a "thread" is a group of related messages, each
of which is a reply to one of the others, except of course for the
original message that began the thread. If you choose to do so,
SeaMonkey and many other mail programs can group such messages
together for your convenience; this grouping is called "threading,"
and the messages taken together are said to be "threaded."

In other words, (I think) the messages are there, just not shown until
you activate the "all" option.

Could be. They could really be gone, or they could be hidden. The OP will only know when he tries.
