That's a problem I often have since I installed SeaMonkey 2.26. I
often have to guess what is the other user meaning, erase the
characters, and correct the message.
Now we and others who want to chime in have an example to concentrate
on. Step by step.
First, under Edit->Preferences->Appearance->Fonts set 'Fonts for:' to
Unicode. What font to you have for Monospace? Is '[ ] Allow documents to
use other fonts' checked?

The accented characters appeared fine for me. My monospace font is
Courier. Other fonts is allowed, but that won't happen in plain-text
formats.
