I set "mailnews.headers.showUserAgent" to true, but the user-agent line

is that? The "mailnews" setting prefix should apply to both, not just
to news. It is not an extension causing the problem, since it occurs in
safe mode as well as normal mode. Is there any way to get the sender's
user-agent to appear in emails?

Have you checked the email source code?

I have some that don't show a user-agent so it doesn't show up with that
pref set to true. The ones that do show a user-agent or x-mailer, do
show up in the message header.

Surely all the email clients are not like that. I should see at least
some user-agents in my emails. I shall have to check the source to make
sure, since I did not think to do that.

I see user-agents for Outlook 14.0, Roving Constant Contact 12.0, cdasend, Create Send, Emailcampaigns and Cold Fusion 9 Application Server in some of the emails I receive.

The rest have no user agents displayed in the message headers, or in the source.

All newsgroup posts have the user agent displayed in the message headers.
