It appears that something changed in the way hardware acceleration
operates. If you experience a black window, you need to turn off
hardware acceleration.

To turn off hardware acceleration you may have to revert to a
previous
version of SeaMonkey, since you can't use a browser with a black
window.

Goto preferences->appearance->content and uncheck the box "use
hardware
acceleration".

Isn't there a setting in prefs.js for this option?

It will not be in prefs.js unless you change it from the default
either
in the UI or about:config.

Bummer. :(

Why?

Wasn't there also a file you could enter the change into (user.js
maybe) somewhere in the profile, which, when SM was re-started, would
be read into prefs.js??

Yes, but i think that the option set in user.js is copied into pref.js
at next close of SM. You can delete the user.js file ... the option is
still active.
You must revert the option in user.js ...

If you're a user who tinkers I'd recommend keeping user.js as documentation of what you changed.
