Yes, not that I recommend turning off auto-updates.

Go to Edit->Preferences->Advanced->Software Installation and, in the
SeaMonkey section, de-select "Automatically check for updates"
and/or de-select Automatically download and install the updates.

It's perfectly reasonable to deselect "Automatically download and install the updates" -- that's what I've done for years. It's much less reasonable to deselect "Automatically check for updates," because then you won't be reminded. You'll have to remember to check manually. I monitor fora like this one, and when a new version comes out, I watch to see how much kicking and screaming there is. If things are quiet, then I upgrade the next time SM offers.

Remember, computer security is an ongoing war between the programmers who patch the holes and the hackers who discover and exploit new ones. The older your software, the more likely it is to have well-known vulnerabilities. Newer software probably also has vulnerabilities, but chances are they haven't been well publicized and exploited yet.

P.S. I haven't experienced any of the issues the OP describes with v. 2.30 on my Win7 Pro system. That doesn't deny her report, I'm just saying it's not a universal problem whenever anyone installs SM 2.30. Some users seem to have systems with a particular combination of features and settings that causes problems, but most do not.
