Paul,
I do not have Shockwave for Director and already tried to completely
uninstall Shockwave Flash several times. I don't remember the details,
but it seems not to completely uninstall. So long as I am able to open
PDF files via SM again, I will wait it stay with version 2.29 for a
while longer before my next upgrade.
Thanks again.

Thanks to those of you who responded to my question. As it turns out,
reverting back to SM version 2.29 only partially corrected the
problem with the Adobe Reader plugin but the flash player continued
to fail/crash intermittently. I have just received the following
notice which applies. I hope it will resolve at least this part of
the problem I've been experiencing.
Probably not, but I hope I'm wrong. The patch addresses a security
issue, but I see nothing in Adobe's description about stability issues.
For myself, I can say that I had no stability issues (hangs or
crashes) before the patch, and expect to have none afterward. YMMV.
If this patch doesn't help, you might try completely uninstalling both
Flash products (Shockwave Flash and Shockwave for Director, if you
have both) and then reinstalling it/them from scratch. It's helped me
sometimes in the past when Flash got cranky.
