Following your accounts setup directions should get you a working
account.

If I wanted to setup an IMAP account for my AOL address.

"IMAP Username: [email protected] (or @love.com, @games.com,
etc.)
Incoming Mail Server: imap.aol.com (Use port 143 for standard or
993 for SSL connections)
SMTP Outgoing Server Address: smtp.aol.com Set the port to 587
SMTP Username: [email protected] (or @love.com, @games.com,
etc.)
SMTP Password: password you use to login to Mail

For a secure connection, check the SSL option for IMAP/POP and TLS for
SMTP in your mail program."

When I create the account the incoming server defaults to 143, so I
cahnge it to 993 for a SSL connection.

To set up that secure connection I go to the Account Settings > Server
Settings and select SSL/TLS for Connection Security, and normal
password.

What are you doing differently in setting up your account?

Could you tell me please if above works for you? In real, not in theory.

It works for real.

What I do is the same as yours. Only:
1. I don't use AOL. I have my own domains registered and hosting at one
of the big provider firms. I use it for years now alreaady and it was
all right with Seamonkey until recently.

Maybe they have to update their security certificates.

It's not the case. The certificate is valid from 16.04.2014 till 16.04.2016.

2. After I do everything like you described above I go to the mail
client in Seamonkey and do "Check mail". Dialog window appears
"Add security exception". But even if this window appears it's not
possible to actually add any security exception, because tickbox
"Permanently store exception" is greyed out.

I can't help with that.

The same with SMTP. So there is no way do get/send any e-mail through
Seamonkey e-mail client unless you want to disable security encryption
and send your login details in open text.

Better than not getting the mail at all.

It depends what you have in your e-mails. Sometimes it's better not to have your mail than to have your mailbox opened to access for someone who should not rather see that messages. E.g. your competitor in business?
