Problems viewing messages

I have been running SM 2.25 (under windows 8.1), since I haven't updated 
because of the sync problem.  Now that I see that my waiting is no 
longer sensible, I tried to update to 2.33.1 and also to 2.38.  In both 
cases I am unable to view my messages with the updates.  The list of 
folders, messages, etc. is complete, but the messages do not appear when 
clicked on.  I have gone back and forth from 2.25 to these newer 
versions.  Unfortunately, now when I am using 2.25, I can view my 
messages -- but no attachments! This is a new problem. The attachment 
paper clip shows in the message list, but when I view the message (any 
message with an attachment) there's no indication in the message pane 
that there's any attachment, so I have nothing to click on.

Please, does anyone have a suggestion for me?
