connection security formats. What are the Gmail parameters that SM can't
handle? Or do you mean to say that Gmail requires insecure sending and SM
doesn't like that?

I'm not quite sure. I had all the parameters that gmail asked for in impap settings but couldn't get gmail to receive the password for sending. Thats when the popup showed that said to click on the less secure setting in Google+. As soon as I did that, the gmail smtp server accepted the password and began working.
