Of course, expanded threads with unread messages show the individual
messages as roman (read) or bold (unread).

If I understand correctly, he wants to distinguish between existing unread
messages and new unread messages, in the folder pane and the thread pane.

Certainly in the folder pane. I don't know I am so worried about the thread pane. When I look at a list of some thirty groups I am subscribed to, I really can't make out the icon changes that indicate a group with new posts. My eyes have declined over the years and the computer screens have smaller pixels. Highlighting the entire group name is much easier to see.
