I'm not asking that either of these two issues in the operation of
the new message icon be fixed, I just wanted to mention them in case
they would be encountered by someone else.

My experience overlaps with yours somewhat.

Let me begin by saying that I have SM set to automatically check all
mail and newsgroup accounts for new messages every 10 minutes and
download any it finds.

For mail accounts, if the account is collapsed (no folders showing), I
get the green down arrow when a new message comes in. However, after
some time (I haven't really investigated how long or under what
conditions), the arrow disappears even though I haven't expanded the
account to read new messages. When I do get around to expanding it,
folders with unread messages are bolded as expected, with an accurate
count to the right of the folder name.

Paul, could I suggest that if you have SM set-up to check for new messages
every ten minutes, after one check, there might be new messages so your
green arrows appears. Ten minutes later, it goes and checks again and if it
finds more new messages, so the green arrow stays, but if there are no new
messages (in that last ten minutes), the green arrow disappears, even though
there may still be new, unread messages from the previous check!!

I don't think it works that way. I have seen groups show the new message icon when the new message came in some hours ago and none since. It wouldn't be much of an indicator if it only lasted until the next time it checked messages.

For newsgroup accounts such as this one, I never see the green arrow
when the account is collapsed. When I expand it to show the specific
groups under it, the group names are bolded if they contain new
messages, with the count to the right just as for mail folders. However,
when I select the group name, SM double-checks its work and updates the
count, so the count that I saw when I arrived is usually off by a bit. I
suppose this is because new messages have been posted since SM last
checked six, eight, 10 minutes ago.

Yeap, e.g., in the mozilla.test newsgroup, there are two messages that I
have read and then turned their markers back on (because at some time I've
wanted to check something myself), so for mozilla.test, I see ....

mozilla.test, 2, 12754 (all in bold)

then, when the new posts in that group are found, that may be updated to ...

mozilla.test, 10, 12762 (all in bold)

and then, when I read the new posts in the group, the numbers would become ...

mozilla.test, 2, 12762 (all in bold)

At this same time, I have mozilla.general which currently shows ....

mozilla.general, , 107017 (all in light grey because there are no unread
messages)

If there is a post to that group, things might change to ...

mozilla.general, 5, 107022 (all in bold)
