If you get the profiles out of the app, then there is then no such thing as a "2.49.5" profile.
There are many reasons for multiple profiles. You can then have as many profiles as you want and pick the one you want when you run the app.
And there are reasons for a single profile for multiple app versions. One time, when looking for the date and time of a bug insertion I was using the same profile for twenty versions of SM, all loaded on the HDD side-by-side.
