I don't know about you, but I have had my Verizon email address for a long time. When they passed things over to AOL in 2017 I had to login to AOL in the browser with my Verizon email address and password. I suggest you try logging onto AOL in the browser with your full Verizon email address as the username with your expected password. If it works, you know you have some sort of a configuration problem. If it does not work you might have been hacked.
