Good clarification.

I think that 2.49 versions were not officially supported in 64 bit, but definitely usable. The limit on backward compatibility was something that Firefox introduced at around FF 55, and since 2.53 is based on FF 56, then that's in place.

For moving from 32 to 64, I know that FRG has noted that you really want to make sure you uninstall anything 32 bit before installing 64 bit.
