frost allows you to search freenet. You might also check out fmn. fmn
has a link on the freedom engine, and frost is on the world wide web at
sourceforge.

At this point, it's hard to say that anyone would use freenet for quick
and easy access to information, but it's been improving. Mostly people
seem to use it to send test messages back and forth to each other,
though there are also a lot of files indexed in the frost newsgroups.

The last time I tried freenet (about a year ago), it was much less
usable than it is now. It's still got a long way to go. Maybe you should
just set up a permanent node (and make sure it doesn't use all your
bandwidth), and then check in every few weeks to see how freenet is
doing?
