Just wanna post this so there's an answer in the archives: Turns out I didn't have real java. I had 'JamVM'. Which, despite running the real java install several times, is still running instead of java. And it won't let me uninstall it. But I have freenet working now by putting in the full path to the real java binary. Getting rid of this JamVM thing can wait I suppose.
