What you describe is possible but lots of work for a high-level
filemaker programmer. I would suggest flagging your members somehow
and importing prospects into the same file. If your members are not
already identified by a dues payment which establishes a start date
and expiration date for their membership, you can set up a separate
field, called for example "Status" and mark members as members and
everyone else something else.

One of the benefits is that you won't get a duplicate record - for
example, one of your prospects joins, and you enter the name and
address into ebase, but don't delete it from your prospects file. So,
you keep sending this person recruiting information along with your
newsletter or whatever else you sent members.

You will need to use FileMaker (not the runtime version) and log in
with the master-level password. Then you can go to layout mode and
make whatever changes you need. More information is in the FileMaker
manual in the section on working with layouts.
