Windows sometimes get confused with filename extensions. The
extension is useful for when you want to do things like double-click on the data
file and have the application automatically open.
Changing the extension does not change the file in any way. So if
you already already have the application open (ie - Filemaker) you should
be able to open a filemaker data file, no matter what is the extension. In
the 'open file' dialog box, you may need to change the 'file as type' option to
all files.

Hi - our server went down last week
while I was importing a bunch of records into ebase and damaged the names and
payments files. I went to the ebase website and printed the procedures
for recovering damaged files.
I got as far as goint into Explorer and
renaming the damaged names database (step 2) and when I hit ok, it changed the
icons on all the ebase files from a windows-like icon to a filemaker file icon
and dropped part of the name and the .102 extensions. However, when you
go to properties, it still says they are 102 files. I am not a Windows
expert and don't know why it did this when I was only changing the name on one
files and what it means - will ebase/filemaker still recognize and make the
necessary relationships? Or do I need to do something to change the
files back?
Bob at Techrocks indicated to me that
he thinks I will need to re-install ebase and the files - I am hoping someone
can help me avoid this!
I didn't want to go any further
with the recovery process or open ebase until I got more information. I
have only been using ebase a couple months - I did speak to the person who
previously was in our office and she never had something like this happen when
attempting a recovery.
Thanks.
