Hi Walt - thanks for the info.  The strange thing here is that the extensions were showing previousto my renaming the names_.102 file and are still showing for all my other files/documents in other programs.  Would I be ok in going ahead with the rest of the file recovery process?

This is a beknighted attempt of Windows to be more Mac-like and pretend that extensions don't exist. Whether you see the extensions on the screen or not is a user settable option. Double click on MyCompter, select Tools, select Folder options, select the view tab and pick more reasonable options than the default which is to not show the extensions. If Windows were bug free and never showed the wrong icon you might be able to trust the icons as being equivalent to showing the extension. Unfortunately Windows is far from bug free. I frequently wind up with it showing me completely bogus icons which is only corrected by rebooting. The first thing I do on new installs is fix that problem so none of our users even know the possibility exists.
