Hi Jon-

Here is an email I sent out to the Ebase folks last year. FMPro gives grants to
offices, but you need to own one copy of each piece of software to apply for more.
That means that for six computers, you need one running FileMaker Server. The Server
costs $419 with the NP discount, and you can apply for five free user licenses after
that (it usually takes 3 months to get them).

Hi Michelle and others-

Since I just sent you my old copy of FMPro, here is my success story of sharing Ebase
with our three field offices. After asking the same questions you have, our solution
is as follows.

We have an IBM server in our DC office that runs Windows NT and software called
WinRouteLite, which routes our DSL service to all our DC computers (and the other
orgs. in our building -- we "lease" it out). One server does it all, and the whole
package cost ~$3000. Then we purchased FileMaker Server for $419 (NP discount from
FMPro) and applied for (and recently won) a grant for 17 user licenses. We asked our
DSL provider for a permanent IP address. Then our field offices installed FMPro on
their machines, and used that IP address as the "Host" machine after opening FMPro on
their own machines. All of our offices have DSL, so while the connection is a little
slow, it is feasible. It takes about 5 minutes for Ebase to open via a 56K modem.

I believe (though I'm not positive) that you need FMPro Server software (as opposed to
a single user copy) if you want to give outsiders access to your database. Once you
install FMPro Server, you'll need to start the FMPro Service within Windows NT to
allow it to be shared as a "host." There are other things you'll have to set, too,
like the allowable file endings (.fmp to .102).

Our server also does daily tape backups of our database, and weekly backups of our
entire office (everyone puts their files on the server rather than their own
machines). The only problem right now is security. Naturally, I changed all of the
passwords, but we don't have a firewall set up. We aren't a controversial group, so
we aren't hugely worried about malicious hackers, but you never know. Any cheap
suggestions are welcome!
