I think it's worth noting that cost effective is not always the same
as inexpensive. Understand, I'm not associated with FileMaker Inc,
neither am I responsible for a non-profit's funding, but from my
perspective as a consultant, full price for FileMaker server is cost
effective for an organization sharing ebase with 8 workstations.
This level of file-sharing activity seriously taxes FileMaker's host
capabilities. One crash could result in damage to files that would
take much more than $500 worth of staff time and downtime to recover
from. Server makes a more stable system, protects the files from a
client crash, and makes backups easier in the case of damage. I
understand that it's a tough juggle, deciding how much the risk is
worth in hard-to-find cash, but it's worth considering the costs of a
fault.
