a worry: we used to have ebase on the server so it now has an old copy of
ebase on it. should we delete the old copy before we put the new one
(that's on our office manager's computer) on the server?

I presume you are going to install a copy of FM Pro on the your server and
use it to host the files to the other machines on the network. That is the
preferred method of running a network. No one should interactively use the
copy of FM Pro on the server (maybe ok if only 2 or 3 users total). Some
other usage, such as network connect, on the server should not cause
problems. Our server also hosts our accounting files and doesn't seem to
have any severe effects. However running backups of client machines from the
server over the network will have a noticeable effect. Or server also hosts
a bunch of "shared" word processor files whose usage is light enough that
they don't cause problems.
