The 48 MB is only a Mac restriction. Memory allocation on pre OS X is very
primitive. I don't know if OS X does better.

At work I run FM server on Win2000 on a machine with 256 MB. At home I run
on Win 2000 on a machine with 256 MB. In both cases it appears to use the
memory well, e.g. first usage of something that scans the whole database is
much slower than subsequent ones.
