About three weeks ago, there was a discussion about backing up Ebase
and the general consensus seemed to be that when you copy Ebase to a
CD it became read only when you copied it back to your hard disk.
I haven't tested the simple copy function. But I have been using CD
to back up my hard disk on a Macintosh iMac computer using Retrospect
as a backup program.
I'd used this previously on Zip Disks.
Just to test, I used Retrospect to restore a previous day's Ebase to
a separate folder on my hard disk. I was able to open it and change
some of the records without changing any of the properties. All of
the test changes were retained in that copy. Opening that folder did
not affect the other copy of ebase on the hard disk.
Then to test another idea, I simply copied Ebase to a CD using a
program called Toast. Having copied it, I could use the CD as a read
only version, opening it in FileMaker ,but all the files were locked
and could not be modified--the CD itself is read only.
Next, I copied that CD's contents into a new folder on my hard
disk--with a different name on the folder to avoid a conflict with
the regular Ebase folder.
That copy could be opened with FileMaker and it was exactly the same
as the original--it could be modified, added to, etc.
If you are restoring a corrupted file from a CD backup, my sense is
that you should put the corrupted file in the trash (without emptying
the trash), copy the file from the CD, check it to confirm it is
working, and only then then empty the trash.
