To follow up, though: You can search for an ampersand by enclosing it 
in quotes, as "&", to get FileMaker to recognize it as text, not an 
operator.

Second, using compound names such as Joe & Elise is not good 
practice, and that's why there are two names. It would be a good idea 
to search  these out and enter the names separately. Labels, letter 
salutations, and similar functions will work more reliably.
