Christina,
A fast line would be DSL, or 256k at a minimum. We've run several databases
remotely when the host and client computers are on DSL, and it works fine.
Of course, on the host computer, you need DSL with a dedicated IP address.
One variable is the size of your database: the larger it is, the longer it
takes to start up. But after that, it's almost as though you are running it
locally.
Another option is to host ebase on a Microsoft Terminal Services server. We
do that for our main database at TechRocks, and it really is the fastest way
to host a remote database. Be forewarned however; administering one of these
implementations is not for the novice user. You have to know something about
Microsoft Windows 2000 and it's services, and how to prevent unauthorized
access to your server (by viruses or hackers).
