It sounds like you have modified what the passwords protect (or perhaps you
are using the guest password(which is completely broken on my system and
suspect all). Changing anything about the passwords, except the value of the
password using the Admin script, is not advised unless you know a lot about
how passwords work.

Again I don't know about Mac protection, but similar things happen on PCs if
you have the readonly bit set on files.
