There are at least two operational challenges to using check boxes. 
One is, as Carl mentioned, assigning a value to a bunch of records 
using the replace command. If you simply replace the value in the 
found set, it overwrites the values with the value in the current 
record. What you need to to is to ADD the value you want to the 
values in the found set with a calculated replace using
Field & "<cr>" & "new value"
Where Field is the field you're working on, <cr> is the FileMaker 
paragraph mark, and "new value" is what you're adding.

The second is searching. If you have values of, for example "Board 
Member" and "Former Board Member", both will show up in searches for 
"Board Member". Best way around that is to leave no spaces in the 
values, i.e., BoardMember and FormerBoardMember.
