It is possible to change the layout. I'm not sure how to advise, since you haven't said what you tried that wasn't successful. in layout mode, make sure the top and bottom margins are 1/2 inch, and the header and footer zero, and the body 1 inch. Horizontal layout is a little tricker, but you can just nudge the text block left or right a bit till it lines up.
