Jill,

The most logical place to do this would be via member payments.  You could mark them via their payments (that is, ebase allows you to mark payments as c3, c4, etc.).  To create a found set, you'd go into the Payments file on the payment entry screen, find for all payments marked c3 or c4, then transfer that found set to the names file for a mailing.  You could also use any unused field on the Bio or Activist screens to mark these folks as c3 or c4 members.  You could also change the field label associated with that field to remind you that is where you've stored that info (changing the label doesn't change the field name, and it's probably best not to change any field names.  Lastly, creatiing a new field for this would be quite simple.  The only drawback of doing this is you need to find some unused "real estate" on which to place that field.

As to how to mark your database, unless you already have a way to separate out what records belong to which entity, you'll have to hand-mark them. How else could you do it - you have to have some way to identify all the records that need to be marked as c3 or c4 before you can mark them (whether individually or as a group).  If you do have a way to identify who is c3 vs c4, you could create a found set of those records and globally mark them all using the filemaker Replace command (in both the Scripts menu and the Records menu (FMP 5).  Bear in mind, though, that if you already have a way to "find" c3 vs c4 members, then why would you need to mark them another way?

Hello,I need to find a way to mark in the database whether the individual belongs to our c3, our c4, or both. And then I need to be able to pull them out for a mailing based on their designation. Do I need to create a new field for this or is there an existing way? And, do I need to go thru all 3,000 names individually to mark this? Thank you!!! Jill A. Kay, M.A.
