Andrew, Several options ...
The most robust is to have FMServer. It's also the most expensive. Under this scenario, you'll also have to have a copy of FMPro for each user. Another approach is to set files to multi-user and have a copy of FMPro running ebase on a host machine. Other users will also have to have a copy of FMPro and use FM's networking features to access the data on the host machine. This is fairly similar to having FMServer, but will not support as many users and is not very robust. You are quite a bit more likely to have problems with file corruption, etc., under this scenario, if I understand correctly. I do _not_ recommend this approach. Data's priceless, and recovering from disaster is very expensive and/or time consuming. Quite a cheap approach is to have Ebase running on one machine, and use freeware remote-terminal software (such as VNC) to operate the ebase machine from other machines on the office LAN. This requires a single copy of FMPro plus the freeware. A limitation is that only one person in the office can get at ebase at any one time. This can work okay in a small office setting, in which a user can call out to colleagues "Is anyone using ebase? I need it." All of these options also require some kind of firewalling to protect your data if the machines on the office LANs have internet IP addresses as opposed to internal-network IP addresses. Having internet IP addresses is not commonly the way small nonprofit LANs are set up, though, so this is not highly likely to be a problem. Note that ebase files should never be sitting in a shared directory on a Windows machine. They should always be in an unshared director -- FM makes use of its own networking system to share the data. Also ... I believe you can get betterh than a $1000 price on FMServer from TechRocks. Get in touch with them to find out more if you want to go that route. What are the requirements for multi-user access to ebase v1? My boss wants me to anticipate all the requirements, especially ones that cost money. I have already priced buying FileMaker Pro twice ($30) and one copy of FileMaker Server ($1000). We already have a network and several computers.
