Important point about the UPS -- Andrew, I'd factory in the cost for one of those on your host machine. Also, factor in the cost for a CDRW drive if your office doesn't have one ... writing CDs is perhaps the most convenient and safe way to archive your ongoing collection of ebase backups.
I do know a group that successfully (?) hosts ebase on an FMPro application (not FMServer). As I mentioned, though, I too think it's a mistake to pursue this approach. I've suggested that that group switch to FMServer. -- Eric -----Original Message----- From: Cheryl Chase [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, July 18, 2002 12:41 PM To: TechRocks Support Subject: [support] RE: Multiuser access to ebase? In my experience, this is not a viable option. When we tried to do this with two users, the database would crash every time both users tried to access the same record (a frequent occurence, actually, even with two users -- one hollers, "hey, do you remember karen charney?" the other opens karen's record, and crash). When the database crashes, it frequently corrupts the files. Because Filemaker's "Recover" facility is seductive but untrustworthy, this is a scenario for disaster. Use FMP Server for multi-user access, don't allow any end user applications on the computer running FMP Server, and protect it with an ininterruptible power supply and regular backups.
