Nope, you're exactly right. Obviously I hadn't thought that through. 
It looks like the "Update" part of the ebase import process uses the 
complicated "set field" process I was talking about as a workaround 
for not having the import\update feature that became available in FM 
version 5. Updating records with the NCOA data should work exactly as 
you describe.
