Yes we do that.  The challenge was in a case where donor Joe Smith was known by more than 1 person.  So, we set up a new field, coded it as a check box, and set up a value list.  We run reports by this, and our staff/board even writes thank you's...and we can keep track of who knows who....

Does anyone track the relationship of a record in e-base to the staff,
members or volunteers of your organization? I'm getting ready to do an
appeal and am adding the contacts of staff members into our database to
send the appeal to. I'd like to have a place to put, for example, "friend
of julie" (or perhaps a code representing this) in the database and want to
know if anyone else does this, and if so, what screen they put this info
in, etc.
