I'm not sure what kind of environment your running this in but do you not have 
any form of maintenance windows that switchovers/upgrades can be performed in? 

Many of Junipers higher end routing platforms have hitless upgrade capabilities 
(not sure about the netscreens), but obviously your paying for that.

The problem is (I described it before) that I have to protect a several 
/24s with bridging and several other /24s via 1:1 NAT.
And I've got VLANs, too.
Last time I checked, nobody seemed to be able to come-up with a solution 
that also included a working failover-scenario.

As the alternative is to spend 50k € on a Juniper Netscreen, it was 
decided that running pfSense on a single-box was the lesser evil....
