Like I suggested, try iperf or netperf between VLAN's and see what
you get. If you're only getting like 25 Mb or something, you have
a major problem. If you're getting 300+ Mb, then you are probably
going to have to live with what you're seeing, get faster
hardware, or keep boxes that require very fast throughput between
them on the same segment.

I definitely see where you are coming from but have little
experience in using iperf or netperf. If you have the time could
you give a crash course on how I would set this up to be able to
get the numbers you are talking about.
Just recalled something while reading thru iperf's (http://
dast.nlanr.net/Projects/Iperf/) web page, and that is I forgot to
mention that this system (pfsense) has traffic shaping enabled.
Not sure if that is being triggered (effecting anything) since I
assume the LAN interface is included in the shaper.
