Hi,

can anybody recommend a switch (8 port or so) that is VLAN capable (and the VLANs actually work with pfSense)?
Any switch that supports VLANs with 802.1q trunking (when properly configured) will work with pfSense. I've used multiple Cisco, HP, Netgear, 3Com and possibly others I don't recall without any problems.

It's mainly for home use (I need a new one), so I'm not sure if I want to afford myself a real Cisco switch (but it would be nice to practice a little with IOS).

Gigabit would be a plus, though it will mostly be used to connect PCs in a wireless "island".
So FastEthernet is probably enough.

And it should be fan-less.

Cisco is out then. As are every other managed rack mountable switch I've ever seen. The HP models mentioned in this thread are nice, but nowhere near silent. The best fanless, managed gigabit switch I've seen is a Netgear GS108T. Actually it's the *only* managed fanless gigabit switch I've ever seen. :) Low price, and works well.
