Hard to say, depends on how this is configured in other parts of your network. If you expect to use a /21, your interface has to be a part of that /21 network. You can't assign IPs that are out of the local subnet, which is what you were trying to do. If your entire internal network is private and everything outside that network is public you won't need to do anything but change your internal interface's subnet.
