So the current comparison is between a fanless enclosure and a supermicro atom server. Let's leave off the drive and memory for now. I'll probably spring for a SSD as suggested. Do I need 4 GB memory or 2... I don't know as yet.

* A minibox.com fanless enclosure with external 80 watt ps runs $70 (silver) and the MB is $190 = $265

versus

* A supermicro atom server from newegg for $360. The ps is 200 watt and there is IPMI. The CPU specs are the same. Video chipsets are different, Intel(fanless) versus Matrox(with server).

So, now let's talk memory and drive. I'd want to use only what I need to reduce heat and power useage. It seems like you get more with the supermicro server that the fanless box. The ps - 80 watts is probably the max it can handle. A Corsair (just picked one) takes up 2 watts under load. No bad. Now for the memory - I seem to recall many years ago there was a rule of thumb that each GB takes up 10 watts. It couldn't be that a 4 GB DDR 2 667 MHz stick sucks up 40 watts now-a-days, could it?
