I want to remove as much possibility for error and confusion as possible.... for those who want work in ambisonics, but aren't interested in the implementation. In the Jack world component channel order has no meaning ... and so names are important. That's why I want to use the naming convention you will use. Then users on OSX and Linux at least have one relatively fool-proof option for listening to UA files on a quality decoder. On the other end of the spectrum, electroacoustic musicians use CSound, PD, MaxMSP, Audiomulch, Bidule, SuperCollider etc. to produce works in ambisonics. These all work slightly differently to each other, but component channel order _is_ important. One connects outlet number 2 to inlet number 2. Outlet number 3 to inlet number 3. One doesn't connect outlet name "Y" to inlet name "Y". And so component channel order needs to be strict and preserved, because channel names do not exist. There is *no* software out there (at least that I know of) that does not require the user to hook up channels (whether by name or by order) to play an ambisonic file. (Except for Rapture3D ... which is commercial ... but is exactly what we need). Authoring environments are even further away. The clarity of component channel order matters. > the same.
