no, 45J predated UHJ.

H would not fit inside the HJ tolerance zone.

Obviously, since the J in UHJ comes from 45J. But my understanding has been that the HJ tolerance zones subsumed both 45J and H. Or at least that it came close, by design.

The ambisonic part of UHJ, as opposed to the pairwise referenced HJ used by the BBC, was and is 35JA' UHJ was/is not a tolerance zone.

Yes, UHJ is and always has been a specific locus, even if it's been modified (once, was it?) since its original inception. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've understood that the locus by design goes through HJ's tolerance zones.

Tell me, has anybody ever collected all of these matrices in a single place? The BBC and NRDC published ambisonic ones I have, but how about all of the developmental versions of what was to become the UHJ locus, and for comparison all of the active matrix quad designs? That might be an interesting exercise, especially if one wanted to see which ones can be automatically distinguished from each other.

How do you described decoding on a Scheiber sphere?

By using tolerance zones, like in the HJ definition, or by using multiple single point decoding solutions to define the locus like Gerzon's papers do. What you probably mean is that sphere itself is an amplitude/phase chart of the transmission (encoded) signal; but I don't think that stops it from being used to describe both the encoding and the decoding side.

NO, it is precisely defined by the ENcoder, not the decoder.

I've been under the impression that while it's obviously best to use the precise UHJ encoding and decoding loci together, the decoder also had its associated toleranze zones to allow for compatibility decoding a la HJ. But okay, I might remember this wrong. If not, Gerzon's discussion of that is somewhere in the decoder papers, near the rationale for using the decoder as a super stereo effect.

The kernel (or equivalent B-format) encoding of UHJ was precisely and unambiguously defined.

So to amplify, there we are in agreement.
