With my Serious Bloke hat on:

Mono is 0,5 D sound. Distance and depth in front of the listener.

Stereo is 1,5 D sound. Left-Right / distance and depth in front of the listener.

Pantophonics is 2D. Front-Back, Left-Right.

Periphonics is 3D. Front-Back, Left-Right, Up-Down. (Binaural also, if it would work.)
